Spotting the Differences
While they are closely related, mold and mildew have distinct appearances and typically affect different types of surfaces in your home.
Mildew
- Appearance: Usually flat, powdery, or downy. It often starts as small white or gray spots and can turn yellowish or brown over time.
- Location: Primarily grows on flat, moist surfaces such as shower walls, windowsills, and sometimes on damp fabrics or paper.
- Management: Generally considered a surface-level issue that can be cleaned with standard household scrubbing products and a stiff brush.
Mold
- Appearance: Tends to be fuzzy or slimy in texture. It can appear in a variety of darker colors, including dark green, black, red, or blue.
- Location: Often penetrates deeper into porous materials like drywall, wood, insulation, and carpeting.
- Management: Because it burrows beneath the surface, it is much harder to clean and often requires replacing the affected materials to prevent it from returning.
General Maintenance Tips
Regardless of whether you are dealing with mold or mildew, the root cause is always the same: excess moisture. To maintain a clean environment, consider the following routine habits:
- Run a bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after showering to clear out steam.
- Inspect the caulk around your bathtubs and sinks regularly, replacing it if it begins to peel or harbor dark spots.
- Avoid leaving damp towels or clothes piled on the floor or in laundry baskets for extended periods.
- Schedule routine inspections of your home's exterior to ensure gutters are clear and water is directed away from your foundation.
